Position Summary
The Director of Manufacturing Automation provides leadership and support to the Manufacturing Engineering team and Manufacturing Engineering Technicians in the development, improvement, maintenance, and elimination of nonconformance in quality and manufacturing engineering processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Director of Manufacturing Automation include the following job duties. The responsibilities include but are not limited to these tasks:

  • Lead the development of plant layout and planning rearrangement of facilities, equipment, and operations for better utilization of space.
  • Works as part of the New Product Development team (NPD) in the introduction of new products and processes.
  • Partner with procurement organization on NPD projects and other supplier related investments and programs.
  • Evaluates and oversees current and prospective manufacturing processes
  • Controls and reduces plant expenses; Implements cost effective manufacturing - taking marketing wants, design Engineering requirements and overlaying this on existing capacities and capabilities to arrive at a cost-effective workable process.
  • Implement and manage product changes and process changes on the production floor related to risk elimination, cost improvement projects, production demand, workstation design, material presentation, etc.
  • Provides collaborative, supportive yet challenging leadership to the manufacturing engineering team.
  • Manage annual goals / objectives, performs Personal development planning with direct reports, fostering individual growth and development.
  • Lead events and activities that focus online balances, capacity analysis, time studies, labor costing
  • Serves as the technical resource to initiate and improve processes related to part quality and process reliability
  • Document what is normal state and then be able to identify actions to correct abnormal conditions
  • Maintains current knowledge base of "best" industry manufacturing practices.
  • General duties to work with the operations team driving root cause and corrective actions for issues pertaining to safety, quality, and customer delivery driving the implementation - Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering Fundamentals.
  • Applies knowledge of engineering principles and practices on safety and ergonomic improvements
  • Assess manual processes, propose automated process improvements, costs
  • Procure new equipment/machinery, identify subject matter manufacturing vendors
  • Coordinate installation, machinery foundation and design
  • Supports safety and environmental practices
  • Ensures compliance with ISO 9001 procedures

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • 10+ years' experience, some of that experience consisting with a company or companies experiencing growth and new machinery implementation
  • Extensive project management experience, beginning to end
  • Manufacturing R&D
  • Experience working with HMI
  • Ability to approach a problem or situation that has not been previously encountered, gather information, make assessments, devise options, recommend and implement the best option to deal with the issue
  • Strong analytical ability to solve issues such as: manufacturing problems and dimensional or calculation errors
  • Ability to prioritize/re-prioritize tasks and carry out root cause analysis
  • Solid understanding of plant machining and assembly processes and overall business operations
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Ability to communicate at all levels with suppliers (assure suppliers component meets application), customers (site visits, meets to establish design specifications with Marketing), outside agencies, etc.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing (Kaizen, 5S, Standard Work, Poke-Yoke, Value Stream Mapping, etc.)
  • Advanced understanding of machine tool operation
  • Familiarity with Computer Systems, Programming, and Office Software, Project Management
  • Competent in advanced blue-print reading including geometric tolerance and dimensioning
  • Ability to work with little technical direction and exercise good judgment
  • Works on site leading team and collaborating with other departments


  • Bachelor's (Preferred)


  • Manufacturing Automation: 5 years (Required)
  • Kaizen: 5 years (Preferred)
