This position will perform a variety of professional estimating duties related to developing estimates and procuring work for heavy civil construction projects. The Heavy Civil and Transportation Estimator will manage and prepare cost estimates for bidding including all essential elements and steps necessary for a successful bid.

Key Responsibilities **

  • Capable of preparing bridge, transportation and heavy civil related project estimates from initial review to owner bid submittal
  • Able to understand owner documents and specifications
  • Experienced in generating quantity take-offs from owner plans and costing outbid items
  • Solicit vendors required for specific project scope items
  • Take-off/verification of quantities
  • Attend and contribute to planning meetings
  • Project Phasing
  • Participate in the project buyout process
  • Maintain bid time scheduling and complete closeout
  • Activity-based costing in HCSS
  • Prepares and maintains the status of plan reproduction
  • Prepares subcontractor bid packages
  • Ensures that we have the proper coverage from subcontractors on bid day
  • Resourceful in leveraging more favorable pricing from subcontractors
  • Meets bid and budget deadlines
  • Creates bid lists that fit the scope of the job
  • Consistently follows up on submitted bids and budgets to close business
  • Properly turns over bid documents and sub buyout information to Project Management promptly
  • Reviews drawings with Project Management team and notes any areas of concern
  • Seeks and qualifies new subcontractors
  • Holds subcontractors to the Great Lakes' Core Values
  • Qualifications*
  • Preferred BS Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent experience
  • Strong working knowledge of bridge projects and transportation-related projects.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of scopes and quantities from plans and specs
  • Design-build experience a plus
  • Comprehends bidding using multiple delivery methods
  • Knowledge of VECPs
  • Understands multiple owner specs and standard drawings
  • Skills to analyze information and opportunities
  • Organizational methods that allow you to work on multiple projects
  • Effectively communicate with subcontractors and vendors
  • Demonstrate creative solutions to problems
  • Enhance team performance by leading and ensuring the team has the necessary resources to meet goals
  • Experienced and competent in the use of Microsoft Applications and Viewpoint
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors
  • Ability to skillfully negotiate
