Job Description

Mechanical Engineer: Design & Development Engineer

Overview:

Our machines use advanced plasma, oxyfuel and laser cutting tools to cut shapes from mild steel, aluminum and stainless-steel plate. You will be taking part in joining an excellent engineering team where products are engineered and manufactured in the Wisconsin plant. You'll work to sole customer needs, advance their global state of the art cutting systems, reduce costs and improve the manufacturability of our products. You will also design, conduct, and analyze experiments using engineering expertise and knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid flows, controls, and mechanical elements. Collaborating with a group of talented design engineers, you will work to develop market leading advancements in system level features and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer technical questions and define project requirements for Customers and Sales
  • Determine project feasibility and manufacturability, including the adaptability of core products and designs to stated purposes.
  • Develop design concepts and drawings using accepted and creative engineering practices.
  • Validate designs using a variety of conventional tools such as DFMEA, experimental and analytical methods, GD&T, and practical hands on performance testing.
  • Building and testing of prototypes.
  • Develop Bills of Materials, Engineering Specifications, Preliminary Time Studies, and Project Timelines.
  • Collaborate with peers to advance proprietary technologies and conceptualize new design features and functions.
  • Work closely with teams to plan, problem solve engineering/manufacturing obstacles and manage projects from inception to market release.
  • Assist in assuring products achieve regulatory compliance and reliability standards
  • Generate appropriate engineering documentation
  • Exercise independent judgment and draw conclusions based upon available information
  • Eventually assume a leadership role tasked with maintaining deadlines and distributing work

Education:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering design and development of automated machinery, systems or finished mechanical components
  • Strong problem solving capability with personal flexibility
  • Gas/fluid systems design automation with linear motion, drive sizing, and pinion selection
  • Mechanical design background in kinematic machines and controls
  • Experimental methods (physical design and statistical analysis)
  • CFD (thermal modeling a plus) and FEA

  • Knowledge of applying Stress/Deflection principles, emphasizing the resolution of issues caused by force and acceleration.
  • The ability to conduct and execute FMEA and GD&T.
  • Materials science background with an emphasis on non-ferrous and ferrous materials.
  • Design for high volume manufacturing methods including:
    • Machining
    • Forming (stamping, forging, etc)
    • Electronics (PLC's Servo Drives etc)
  • 3D CAD (Solidworks or AutoCad), Simulation Software and MS Office
  • Project Management with the inclination and capacity to take a leadership role, while making versatile contributions to advancement of engineering technologies, product development efficiencies and the continuous improvement of all related design and manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills combined with the ability to collaborate with others

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with product development and a strong understanding of industrial product design and commercialization with respect to lean manufacturing
  • Knowledge and experience in gas dynamics, plasma physics, and material science.
  • Experience in value engineering and cost reduction in product design.
