Job Description

A very reputable manufacturing company is looking to add a Process Engineering Manager to their team!

The primary objective of this position is real productivity / efficiency savings in the Extrusion environment -- continual improvement and innovation in extrusion technologies (may also include some value added operations in Fabrication). This includes supporting equipment choices, configuration, and methods as well as Lean and Operational aspects to minimize setup times and maximize throughput in a low volume / high turn-over environment.

  • Project Management for various productivity and Capital Expenditure projects enacted in extrusion with real monetary outcomes (recognized in P&L).
  • Providing expertise (both strategic and tactical) in processing specialty polymers, engineering resins, and proprietary alloys with profile extrusion processes demonstrated through hands on manufacturing engineering for improving processes lending to repeatable manufacturing including:
    • Selection of Equipment
    • Processing of Materials
    • Set-up and Realization of Product on the Extrusion Floor
    • Provide closed loop process with Engineering/Development

  • Liaison with Engineering and R&D on manufacturability as design inputs.
  • Liaison with Engineering to equip Production with trouble shooting and training protocols.
  • Employ extrusion expertise (familiarity with plastics, engineered resins, and specialty polymers / alloys - material flows, cooling technologies, etc.) to support improvement ideas. Challenge the status quo in approach to complex extrusion situations for efficient manufacturing.
  • Providing expertise (both strategic and tactical) in automation or equipment solutions for efficient processing of specialty polymers, engineering resins, and proprietary alloys with profile extrusion processes.
  • Provide expertise (both strategic and tactical) in creative extrusion approaches including in-line value-add, multiple co-extrusions, and filled and foamed materials.
  • Challenge the status quo in approach to set-up and labor utilization for efficient manufacturing.
  • Provide expertise (both strategic and tactical) in creative approaches including in-line value-add and other productivity initiatives.
  • Hands on LEAN and efficiency leadership impacting set-up and run times on the extrusion floor.
  • Industry best in innovative outcomes to continually secure new market share including:
    • Equipment pacing world class for technical capabilities and efficiencies.
    • Short setup/startup times toward cost control
    • Continual improvement in dimensional and aesthetic results
    • Processing difficult geometries and materials

  • Support new equipment / tooling methods by helping to select, enact, and train on them (including effective project management).
  • Build effective trouble shooting teams / procedures and training regimes for talent pipeline.

Example Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):

  • Support the operations team in finding efficiencies with hands on implementation.
  • Liaison with Engineering on cooling and sizing methodologies that are repeatable and do not involve long setup times.
  • Support the engineering team in enforcing process controls while enabling production trouble shooting expertise.
  • Support running materials less familiar to the team in collaboration with the Material Science Engineer by giving one-on-one support and training.
  • Support material strategies to minimize waste and maximize reclamation of regrind.
  • Support the R&D team by lending complementary experience and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Support visual metrics and real-time control initiatives to assure effective labor utilization.
  • Support new equipment / tooling methods by helping to select, enact, and train on them (including effective project management).
  • Realize year-over-year productivity through continually improved methodologies.
  • Assist the Engineering and Production teams realize competitive quality, material controls, and throughputs.
  • Support the production teams by coordination with engineering for continually improving the detail in the Visual Standard Work (VSW) and other operational guidelines.
  • Other requirements for the position include:

  • Must work in a safe and responsible manner - including the creation of safety instructions and training in the extrusion process controls.

  • Qualifications:

    • Bachelor of Science in relevant Engineering degree (IE or ME) and Significant Experience in Extrusion operations and Polymer Processing.
    • Proven track-record in extrusion environments and relevant materials
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (including Visual Basic) to create automated spreadsheets as well as Word, PowerPoint and other computer tools is a plus.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at once.
    • Must have a cooperative attitude towards peers, supervisors and management.
    • Lean, SPC, continuous improvement and project management knowledge and experience is a plus.
    • Proven Leadership in driving new, better, safer or more efficient ways of doing things.

    Responsibility for Work of Others

    • None, but may provide training, work instruction and strategy to Production, Development and Engineering personnel.

    Physical Demands

    • Required to stand, walk, bend, stoop and move on concrete 8+ hrs./day
    • Occasionally may be required to lift up to 60 pounds
    • Travel occasional is possible <15%

    Work Environment

    • Works in both an office space and manufacturing environment.
    • Exposed to dust, odors, fumes and noise associated with extrusion and machining manufacturing processes.
