Gpac is partnered with a well-established and growing Medical Device Manufacturer that is ready to interview and hire for a Sr. Electrical Sustaining Engineer . The company has a strong customer base manufacturing precision instruments and tools.  They are looking for someone with demonstrated design process skills in leading design and implementation.  The ideal candidate have the ability to implement automation, either test automation or production process automation with robotics or PLCs.


  • Leads Design Changes to existing Electronic and Electro-Mechanical Medical Device Products
  • Supports production of existing electrical / electronic products by providing leadership on Electronics related quality and workmanship processes. 
  • Designs and Builds manual and automated test equipment to support Manufacturing, Supply Chain and NPD Testing needs.  
  • Performs troubleshooting of electronic and electro/mechanical devices as needed.

Sr. Electrical Sustaining Engineer Responsibilities:


  • Proactively provides technical support to Instrument Production, and Supply Chain and Quality Engineering departments in the manufacture of power surgical instruments and accessories.

    • Development and maintenance of Manufacturing and Test Procedures.
    • Assists with Warranty / Failure Root Cause Analysis on electronics & electromechanical devices.
    • Participates in maintaining, improving, and implementing Quality and Reliability efforts.
    • Performs troubleshooting of electrical surgical instruments & accessories and leads improvement events to correct problems.
    • Provides design input to product development teams regarding how to improve manufacturability and repairability of new and existing products.
    • Ownership and execution of Corrective and Preventative Action projects as required.
    • Supports compliance with ISO & FDA requirements.
    • Mentoring and training of Manufacturing Technicians.
    • Works with NPD project teams to develop new products.  This may include:

      • Development of value streams in the Manufacturing area.
      • Creation of Manufacturing Procedures and other documentation per SOPs.
      • Design, Validation and Installation of new test fixtures.


  • Leads Sustaining Engineering activities for electrical & electro-mechanical products.    This includes oversight of changes to drawings of components and assemblies and other documentation required for Document Change Orders that are compliant with FDA, EU and UL requirements.

    • Use Altium Designer to revise Printed Circuit Board Assemblies.   Works with Mechanical Engineers & drafters on the mechanical aspects of electrical assemblies and wire harnesses.
    • Exercises judgment on tolerance, material selection, manufacturing methods, and component selection.
    • Performs Risk Management activities per ISO-14971 in support of NPD and existing products.
    • Reviews all Change Orders for electrical products to ensure continued Electrical Safety compliance.
    • Initiates and oversees UL File maintenance for Electrical Safety related changes.
    • Acts as a contact for auditors from Electrical Safety approval agencies such as UL.

  • Designs, documents, builds, validates, and maintains test fixtures and automated test equipment for Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality use in testing Medical Device Products.

    • Identifies, justifies and procures capital equipment associated with manufacturing and testing new or existing products.
    • Will procure, maintain and oversee use of  IEC-60601-1 based electrical safety test equipment.  
    • Specifies, develops and validates software for automated test fixtures.

      • Proficiency with National Instruments LABVIEW is required.
      • Experience with PLC programming is a plus.

    • May work with product development teams to design, build and validate automated test fixtures and associated software for Design Verification in support of NPD.

  • Provides support to outside vendors to resolve technical issues.
  • Provides support to outside sales force and customers to resolve technical issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Sr. Electrical Sustaining Engineer Knowledge and Abilities:


  • BS or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • 5 years of Electronics design and manufacturing experience.  Medical Device experience is a plus.
  • Expertise in designing electronic control systems for medical devices.

    • Expertise designing analog and digital electronics, and wire harnesses required.
    • Experience with power electronics and motor control a plus.
    • Experience using Altium or similar CAD tools for multilayer PCB design a plus.
    • Experience with LabVIEW a plus.

  • Solid understanding of regulatory requirements for medical device design control and manufacturing.

    • Experience making design changes to medical devices under FDA complaint Design Controls is desired.
    • Experience with ISO-14971 compliant Risk Management process as applied to medical devices and software is desired.
    • Experience with electronics manufacturing practices and standards such as IPC-A-610 desired.
    • Experience in designing for medical electrical safety and EMC requirements per IEC-60601 is a plus.

  • Ability understand and revise complex analog and digital circuit designs used in Medical Devices.
  • Proficiency with electronic & electro-mechanical assemblies.
  • Moderate to advanced electrical / mechanical troubleshooting skills including use of: Oscilloscopes, multi-meters, power supplies, Function Generators, Hipot testers, dynamometers, and GPIB controlled equipment.
  • Ability to apply scientific reasoning to resolve technical problems.
  • Knowledge of the company documentation system.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of company standard operating procedures as required for this position.
  • Basic understanding of regulatory requirements for medical device design control and manufacturing.
  • Ability to apply basic scientific reasoning to resolve technical problems.
  • Ability to write manufacturing and test procedures
  • Experience in the design, operation, build, test, and maintenance of test fixtures and automated test equipment.
  • Proficiency in the use of circuit schematics to build, test and troubleshoot electronic circuits.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other job associated software.
  • Basic understanding of various surgical techniques as related to surgical instruments a plus.
  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
